What is Reasonable?

the politics of common sense

Q: What is Reasonable?

A: Recently when discussing politics with a dear soul, I was inspired by a new vision of possibility for the future of this country.

Current day: Walking amidst the minefield of the glitched-out matrix of blame and celebrated ego-identification, it has been hard for me to see where we can possibly go as a nation, much less, as humanity. But I am not giving up and truly there is nowhere to go even if someone were to want to. The samsaric wheel continues to spin, evolving and devolving as we go. Personal power exists in the choice of who we are being at a given moment. For example, there is so much outside of my control yet what I can work with is my response versus my reaction, my attitude, and even my beliefs. Deeper yet is how I relate to the thoughts and emotions that flow through me. And further, the origin of said thoughts and emotions.

THE POLITICAL SPHERE

So here I find myself observing the political sphere in no particular order: 1. With blurred news spouting through the collective mind moment to moment there is a constant wondering if it is swayed, false, corrupt, or true… who can know in this “climate”? 2. Our presidential election is just around the corner. If I thought the previous debates brought division, my intuition tells me I have not seen the edge yet. 3. A hijacked democracy on the brink of disaster.

While studying the leadership, the ones behind the leaders, and the motivations that move them all on a psychological level does not bring a reprieve, it does bring understanding. The ego is heightened, and the tension runs high. The extremes of the spectrum of political leaning are meeting each other in wrathful absurdity.

These are not simple times. Life feels utterly complex even those who attempt to burrow away into nature are still just a text away from the chaos of the masses. I can feel the pressure within my own body and mind. And yet the answers to our most achingly painful circumstances seem plausible with sacrifice as the price. And it is the ego that has to be put to death, the sacrifice of the beloved identities of which is clung to for meaning..ie in this case perhaps republican, democrat, etc. Do we even know what those terms stand for anymore? The distinctions are blurred and corrupt.

EGO VS HUMILITY

Using my own life as an example, I am seeing where my ego “protects” me from humiliation or from what the ego itself deems as weakness. Humility is always the balm in these moments of treason of the self. Humility radiates as the opposite of what the ego whispers into the ear of the seeker in moments of vulnerability. It exists as an alternative choice to the whims of our egoic desire.

There is also a voice within that is the antithesis of the ego and it is a voice of reason. I’ve been paying attention to where this “reason” reveals itself here and there, sparks of light ignited in the collective by certain thought leaders and by actions of people with true integrity. Those who are true wordsmiths of the heart can wield their pen as a sword of fire with dignity. There are few of these and yet they are there. They are the heroes of our day. Some are parents, others rebels. Maybe activists, farmers, and teachers. They are good people driven not by what society can give to them but by a deeper consciousness that is aligned with a standard beyond what is popular.

REVERENCE FOR THE VOICE OF REASON

When I think of the people whom I have admired in my life…Jesus, Joan of Arc, Martin Luther King, Gandhi, Marcus Aurelius, William Shakespeare…all were human, and some transcended ego better than others, yet they all had a reverence for that which is greater than themselves alone. And from my perspective, gifted by the voice of reason.

If there is a future that lifts us from the trenches of our current interwar of intellect, big business, and manipulation for personal gain, I believe it will be built upon the foundation of this voice. New words, new thoughts, and new actions that are grounded, integral, and resonate with the timeless reference to what we used to call common sense.
