How Are You?

After glancing from side to side, I rest my eyes on the first word of this question. What exactly do I mean when I ask this question of others? It is perhaps the number one greeting amongst friends, family members, and even at times amidst strangers. And yet, where are we going with this inquiry? Is there a true desire to know the “how” of the human being before us? What is “how” about anyway? It certainly isn’t why, what, when, or who…

What Is Holy About This Moment?

This time of year is always a very significant marker of death and rebirth; both on the cosmic stage demonstrated with such elegance by Jesus and his disciples and as well for me on a personal level. Five years ago this week, I went through an intense psychological death-- I left my homes, supposed marriage, livelihood, community, and a hefty layer of my false identity.

What Are You Leaving Behind?

Today marks the spring equinox. This day is a living paradox of mystery and science, that which is enigmatic and yet clearly makes sense when studied through measure. The very practical notion of the sun crossing the celestial equator, as well as the vibrant metaphor of an expressive rebirth following a long internal winter season. The flowers bloom through the snow and our animal nature is stirred towards procreative efforts. While the energy is that of moving forward and rising up, we are simultaneously shedding layers of dead weight of what no longer serves us. What are you leaving behind?

What Did You Learn in 2020?

This year of years has proven to accelerate every other process in its wake. What do I mean by this? When we are in a crisis, regardless if it is personal or global, we are forced to reconcile with what is truly important. Priorities are highlighted amidst the necessity to remain centered while navigating the challenging terrain of the unknown.

Due to the lack of linear form we have now entered within the portal of this new decade, there is no particular order of lessons to discover. Each cosmic teaching disguised within the mundane is a world of its own, each moment a continuation of the one before and a prequel to the movie of our future. While on the river of deep gratitude one has the opportunity to arrive at the basecamp of what is Awesome. May that which we have learned in this past year prepare us for what has yet to come.

What Color is Your Shadow?

Beyond the lit candle sparkling a dance upon the cloth circular womb of this Mongolian yurt I write from tonight, there lies the shadow, inevitable in nature. This time of year aches for deep reflection and with 2020 coming to a close, there is endless material to digest in contemplative thought. While many of us seek refuge from the exposure of such density and corruption that has literally come to light in recent times, I find myself invited to explore more of what lurks underneath.

Is Faith a Mountain?

In the present day epic unfolding of what I have perceivably known as my life, I can only give thanks and more thanks for what is currently revealing from within. Tests, there have been many, will certainly continue to appear upon the path ahead. Yet at this moment when I had nearly lost my footing while immersed in waves of circumstantial exhaustion, a bold new light of resonant power illuminates my inner darkness and despair. The unconscious is exorcised as I dutifully surrender to the gift at hand and lean into the brilliance of my steadfast faith.

How Do You Prepare for a Pluto Return?

The best thing we can do right now is gear up for the long haul. Stamina. A word of strength and in this moment, possibility. We always have options in the face of deep challenge. Maybe we resist completely, hide and scurry away under our metaphoric blankets, hoping that others will take care of the dirty work for us. Perhaps we get loud and speak out against, activating the fight instinct without really knowing where to direct our angst. Or maybe, just maybe we can orient ourselves in a center of gravity that can withstand any storm. And storms…they are coming.

Are you there, God? It’s us, Humanity…

Growing up with Judy Blume as a go-to author in my tweens, she helped me to start formulating my ideas around ‘God’. Her controversial Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret. ruffled some conservative feathers due to the exploration and introduction of sexuality and religion for young women entering puberty. Really? Today, with iPhones, nothing is off-limits it seems, and Blume’s honest approach is far behind us.

Catharsis Anyone?

With the intensity of the cosmic play by play of this Capricorn season, who needs Netflix? Throughout time we have sought actors to reflect the emotions we desire to access within our own hearts. Theater can bring us into these depths we haven’t known or perhaps have hidden far away. In this moment now, our personal truth is on center stage, asking for our attention and to stay tuned for what it has to say.

Did Someone Say Shadow?

Ode to Scorpio ~

From the silken midnight waters

To the fire within the darkness

  A poisonous dart of passion

Questionable acts of the heartless

There is a rumble from the depths

And truth seekers continue on

  Regardless of discomfort

They persevere until the dawn

  The shadow invites us in

And it isn’t all that’s nice

Time to look and not avoid

Deconstructing from the vice

What’s at Stake?

Everything. From our inner peace to a piece of land, what was once fertile ground is now in a state of desertification. I just finished watching my brother Ryland and the crew of Kiss The Ground’s long-awaited and perfectly timed documentary*. Following the pre-screen viewing, I am left with a sensation of possibility and rebirth amidst the dire straits of these times we barely know we are inherently facing.

Are You on the Trajectory of the Churn?

If I am a human being on planet earth nearing the new decade of 2020, then there is no way that I am not churning, deeply. And for those of you who are not “in the churn” according to your personal opinion…I respectfully disagree, from my perspective…you are.

What does it mean to be on this trajectory of sorts? From over here, it seems that we are all being fortified, tested, and squeezed if you will. It is up to each of us to approach this consciously or unconsciously. When we have an opportunity to have foresight, it would behoove us to listen rather than dismiss. However, history has shown us that as stubborn as we are as a species, we generally do not learn until we are in a retrospective mood.

Does the Equinox Reflect a Pause?

Imagine ‘Balance’ in your mind. What do you see? A spoon on someone’s nose? A yogi in seated meditation? A scale in perfect harmony? Equinox comes from the deliciously intricate Latin word aequinoctium, meaning equal nights. This time of year, for a moment in time we have a 12-hour day with respect to a 12-hour night. And thus, the balance is but a pause in time, a gasp of breath…exhaling into the walk towards winter.
