Is That Smoke?
Q: Is That Smoke?
A: We are one family. Yes, presently that is smoke from Australia burning up in flames, bringing tears to our eyes. Past: It is the residue of our beloved rainforest in ash form. Future: that scorched earth over there…we used to call that California.

I went for a walk in the luscious Canadian rainforest just days ago and was stopped by the song of a frog. I had been praying and paused. Right before me, a frog began her song…she sang of the preciousness of nature, the symbiosis of life, earth, and animals. Her vocal cords stretched to encapsulate her aching heart, pleading with me to help her, to listen deeply to the urgent request at hand.
Sinking into the mud, I came to my knees and placed my hands on the pulsing soil. How dare we? How dare we test the very breath of life? We don’t yet know the cost of our arrogance, yet it is chasing us at a valiant speed. The war is already in motion, not just with Iran but inside our minds. Our lives and those of our children are on the line. Will we sacrifice our very souls for just one more ounce of pleasure to fill our glass of sorrow? We just might. I hope not.
This is Saturn conjunct Pluto. The lunar eclipse of this full moon in Cancer brings forth an uprise of tension upon the earth mother herself, a power play of pride between man and his ego is manifesting to the maximum with severe consequences. When will we let go of fighting ourselves? When will we surrender to love and stop choosing to ignore what is truly occurring before our eyes? These are the questions I am taking into my own inner fires right now. And I ask you to do the same.
This supercharged moon opposes Pluto conjunct Saturn and Mercury revealing an astrological spearhead of which I haven’t personally seen since learning to read these ancient texts of the heavens. I’ve been noting this moment in 2020 for nearly 15 years, first, because it occurs near my sun and secondly because every astrologer on the planet is doing the same.
The energy now is deeply oppressive in nature - be diligent and see if you can welcome the very challenging thoughts and feelings that may arise as fodder for growth and inner work, no lack of practice around these parts.
In essence, we are living right at the cusp of death and rebirth, a shift from the old rigid affairs into a new possibility. The cusp can be achingly long!! The tectonic plates are shifting under our feet even if we can’t fully see the outcomes.
We know that death isn’t easy. However, as we are brought further into the metaphoric soil, we have a chance to be new again, and goodness is this soil fertile.
With all of these powerhouses in Capricorn as we initiate 2020, we can intuit profound shifts in the politics of the planet as well as within the art forms that frame our culture. Both are resonant with the Capricorn zodiac as art being our emotional response to the politics of the moment.
The pain point - We are witnessing and experiencing a collapsing inside of the patriarchal structures that have governed us for some time. Thank God. Yet…not without a damned fight if they do say so themselves, and they do. We’ll need to rebuild as we dissolve - very metamorphic, very cocoon-like.
Clearly, this is a pristine opportunity for inner work and an empowered way of participating in the forceful changes before and within us.
On January 12th Saturn conjunct Pluto will be exact, at 23 degrees Capricorn. It is said that Saturn represents our conscious drive for power and Pluto represents our unconscious drive for power. This is a very Persephone-esque invitation to descend into the inner realms, exploring our shadow nature which will become more of an active visual landscape than perhaps your everyday. This will provide yet another opportunity to flex your courage and witness yourself, surrender where needed, and allow compassion to arise.
Where we have been resisting, the bonds are bound to be broken. Another question for inquiry, where can we loosen our grip?
Pluto + Saturn = Catharsis if you will, and it will reflect in both the personal spheres as well as the collective ones. Take care of yourself my friends. We are in this together.
May we listen with reverence to the frogs as they sing us the lullabies of truth…
