What Did You Learn in 2020?

This year of years has proven to accelerate every other process in its wake. What do I mean by this? When we are in a crisis, regardless if it is personal or global, we are forced to reconcile with what is truly important. Priorities are highlighted amidst the necessity to remain centered while navigating the challenging terrain of the unknown.

Due to the lack of linear form we have now entered within the portal of this new decade, there is no particular order of lessons to discover. Each cosmic teaching disguised within the mundane is a world of its own, each moment a continuation of the one before and a prequel to the movie of our future. While on the river of deep gratitude one has the opportunity to arrive at the basecamp of what is Awesome. May that which we have learned in this past year prepare us for what has yet to come.

Winter Solstice Reflection: A Year in Review?

The natural inclination to withdraw from external stimulus arrives with the North winds upon the cusp of autumn and winter. As this year has proven to be anything but “normal,” it is quite possible that we could even overlook this very personal invitation to reflect.

Just because we may find ourselves in lockdown or hunkered in doesn’t mean we won’t be seeking to distract ourselves. For many, our senses are nearly numb with controversy and the holidays will look vastly different than in previous years.

What Color is Your Shadow?

Beyond the lit candle sparkling a dance upon the cloth circular womb of this Mongolian yurt I write from tonight, there lies the shadow, inevitable in nature. This time of year aches for deep reflection and with 2020 coming to a close, there is endless material to digest in contemplative thought. While many of us seek refuge from the exposure of such density and corruption that has literally come to light in recent times, I find myself invited to explore more of what lurks underneath.

Is Faith a Mountain?

In the present day epic unfolding of what I have perceivably known as my life, I can only give thanks and more thanks for what is currently revealing from within. Tests, there have been many, will certainly continue to appear upon the path ahead. Yet at this moment when I had nearly lost my footing while immersed in waves of circumstantial exhaustion, a bold new light of resonant power illuminates my inner darkness and despair. The unconscious is exorcised as I dutifully surrender to the gift at hand and lean into the brilliance of my steadfast faith.

Can You Feel the Momentum?

Happy glorious new moon in Scorpio marked with a swiftness upon the horizon. Mars is the god of war and also refers to a planetary body that rules over our actions, aggressions, and masculinity. With this fierce warrior planet now direct after a long Mars retrograde through its home sign of Aries, we may finally access the realm of decisiveness, clarity, and revivalist chutzpah that has been lacking the past several months. Emerging from a chaotic deep-dive review of our beingness, we will be gaining speed by the day while noting the revelatory insights gleaned from our recent past.

Relationship?

Each of us is an embodiment of relationship; relationship with God, ourselves, family, lovers, community, our world, and even the stars above. Without one another, we would be sovereign heartbeats looking for love aimlessly in order to know ourselves. We need each other. There is no actual alone, there is no true independence. And this Taurean full moon will remind us of this truth, as the veil continues to thin while the sun’s rays of Scorpio are cast across the night sky.

Where Do You Stand?

This is an epic question in a moment of fierce polarization, within a country that refers to itself as “United”. I wonder for how long have we actually been divided in our thinking, preferences, priorities, and intentions as a nation? How long have we been living under a false pretense that everything is “fine”? And who is “we” anyway? Can we group together 331M culturally independent people and assume we are truly all working towards the same future? Would you define our culture as cohesive? The clock is ticking until secession begins.

Why Proactive Mental Health?

Our mental health is at risk.

We are living through a societal dissolve and there within invites an epic scene of chaos. Perspective is King. How will we navigate these waters? Some will not, others will cling to a “side” for dear life (or to viciously fight for or against as a way to justify violence), and few will go deep within to resource from that which is greater for understanding, clarity, perspective, courage, and faith. Faith is cultivated from experience beyond belief. What do you currently believe?

What Is Extraordinary About 2020?

“I feel within me a consuming fire of heavenly love

Which has burned up in my soul everything that was contrary to itself

And transformed me inwardly into its own nature.”

-William Law

What isn’t extraordinary about 2020 could be a better question. We have officially “left the building” as a society, or perhaps have sailed into the great unknown of uncharted territories. Either way, the structures of old, past ways of being, our false sense of security, and the times of “uniting” within our country are behind us. We are in a new room. And it is a revolution in the making.

Are Those Stars in Your Lapis Lazuli?

Have you ever stared into a stone and asked it to share the mysteries of its life? Or tried to imagine the journey it has lived, mined from the center of the earth to now sitting on your desk staring back at you? It’s not that I am bored and have nothing to do, trust me, it’s just that there is something intrinsically profound about the weighted cosmic majesty I experience when meditating with my Lapis Lazuli.

Are You an Extraterrestrial?

It is in moments like this on planet Earth that many of us may yearn for another time, another space, that feels more like “home” than what is currently being served. This is normal. It is natural to desire to be living in the “way it used to be”, “when things were easy” and “when we could do this” or “that”.

Or perhaps we are becoming perpetual daydreamers of other lands, or even other planets that we pray to escape to---also normal in the face of extreme difficulties. Although nostalgia and escapism are ways to avoid feeling the reality of the moment, they merely mask the inevitable; to accept what is ours to feel, see, and experience in order to transmute the challenge into a new possibility.

How Do You Birth a Reality?

Birthing a reality is a commonplace event. Each of us has created our personal bubble in response to our current life circumstances. Regardless of what is occurring to us externally, which may very well be out of our control, we are deeply responsible for our internal experience---almost a parallel reality if you will.

A key to our personal freedom is when we can travel between our inner and outer world with seamless grace and ease. We are one. We are transparent. And...We are living a congruent truth. There is no hiding, need for secrets, or shame/guilt that can survive such a luminescent attitude. There are shadows yet, and if we are humble in our approach, we can transmute that darkness into our empowerment.

Are We in Labor?

I suppose it depends on who the ‘We’ is. If ‘We’ are the ones who are aware that the current systems aren’t working while recognizing we are living into a choiceless election for the President of our country, then yes. We are in labor. Labor of what? We are birthing a new reality. Regardless of gender, we each have the power to give birth to the new. And now, perhaps a new politic. New governing structures, beyond the polarized imprisonment of mind. A world where we’ve combust into flames fueled by the blame and projection upon one another and the outcome? A rising of the phoenix of the future from the ashes of the past.

What Is the Cost of Freedom?

Isn’t it curious how in exploring this very paradoxical question we are immediately faced with an existential crisis? How can that which is inherently free have a cost? Good question.

Perhaps the reality that we are even in this inquiry reveals the truth about where we find ourselves at this moment. Where are we in: time (as in what century), location---externally (Yemen, the US, or...) and internally (in my mind, my heart, my body, or all three), the galaxy (Earth, Venus), the spectrum of duality (do I believe this is true)? Let the exploration begin…

Crisis or Chrysalis?

Let’s pause, take a deep breath, and observe the moment. Can I get to an objective perspective while immersed in such a profoundly uncomfortable subjective experience? What is this all about? And where is my power at this moment? Regardless of what the current crisis is, I’ve been through enough of these to understand that there is something for me to learn here. This perceived moment of immense challenge will inevitably fortify me into a new level of resilience and I can trust that I am letting go of what I no longer need, making room for more truth on the other side.

Are You Breathing?

Under a knee? Behind a mask? Swarmed by locusts? In the midst of the sandstorm? Can’t summer in the south of France? Everyone has their relative anxiety-inducing reality. One equals death, the other equal inconvenience. We share a world and yet we each live in our own. There are as many different realities as there are people on this planet. Some people share common circumstances thus their days are similar, yet most hover inside a bubble of their own creation. Whatever it is, be it horrific, sad, or exhilarating and inspiring, it is familiar and, in that familiarity, there is false a sense of security; or an idea that the world as I know it is indeed the world.

What Can You Do?

At this moment, as with any moment that I am conscious and aware, I can always, always listen. First, I listen to my heartbeat, and to the powerful voice of love that guides me toward my truth. And from there, I can listen to the many voices of my community who have fought hard to finally be seen, heard, and witnessed. There is no ‘easy’ about this moment, every single one of us is called to do our part. If we have been living in the shadows of our own shame, fear, and suffering, it is time to rise into healing. If we have been oppressed into a voiceless and shamed reality, it is time to rebel into action from our heart, if we have been an oppressor - consciously or unconsciously, it is time to recognize our weakness and ignorance. And most likely, if you are human, you can claim all of the above.

What if…?

Your heart is heavy. Not because you saw another black man killed by police... but because that man was your brother or husband. What if you woke up to learn that your son had been murdered? What if you couldn’t breathe because you were being held under a policeman’s knee without mercy? Is it a crime to be black? No. Is it a crime to be racist? Yes. Why are we living in a camera obscura reality where justice is ignored and bigotry is allowed?
